Throwback Thursday? More like THROWBACK TO THE GRAVE! Today, we’re digging up a Halloween classic that refuses to stay buried!
It’s 1964, Halloween is creeping up, and Bobby “Boris” Pickett has everybody doing the Monster Mash! The song originally hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1962, proving that Americans have always been suckers for a good Halloween party… especially one hosted by the undead.
And can we talk about those early TV performances? They hadn’t exactly perfected lip-syncing yet, so watching performers try to look terrifying while matching their mouths to a prerecorded track could be a little… monstrous. Forget today’s high-tech music videos. Back then, you got a microphone, a spooky voice, some questionable choreography, and a whole lot of enthusiasm. Oscar-worthy? Maybe not. Iconic? Absolutely!
The song was inspired by Pickett’s impression of horror legend Boris Karloff, and its mad-scientist storyline features a laboratory creation that becomes the life of the party. Apparently, even monsters get tired of hanging around the crypt and need to bust a move now and then.
More than six decades later, “Monster Mash” is still crawling out of its grave every October, reminding us that some songs never get old. They just get a little more… deadicated to their craft.
So crank it up, practice your best zombie shuffle, and remember: if the neighbors complain about the noise, just tell them the party is full of dead beats.
Happy Halloween, Sheboygan! We’ll see you on the dance floor… assuming you can still move your limbs!
