Sheboygan County Clerk Jon Dolson has notified the County Board of Supervisors that he has been suspended by the Wisconsin Elections Commission over actions he took to help to resolve a neighborhood dispute. In a letter to the County Board released yesterday, Dolson said that a complaint had been filed against him with the WEC, and that on September 10th, the WEC issued its determination that he had intentionally accessed and shared an elector’s unredacted voter record from the voter registration system in an attempt to try and resolve a neighborhood dispute. The WEC suspended Dolson’s access to the elector database and is required to receive additional training, and the agency referred the case to the Sheboygan County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
DA Joel Urmanski, responding to an email from WHBL news, said that he sought and obtained a special prosecutor to handle the matter, but as of earlier this week the special prosecutor has not yet made a charging decision.
Sheboygan County Administrator Alayne Krause told WHBL news that the matter does not fall under County Board responsibility as the County Clerk is an independently elected official chosen by county voters, and the County Board has no direct role to play in the matter.
Wisconsin law states that violation of the state statute involved constitutes a Class I felony, the lowest-level felony charge in Wisconsin, carrying a maximum penalty of up to 3-1/2 years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
Dolson said in his letter that the actions will not interfere with his office in the upcoming election.
