And what a time to be alive! Spring of 1997. I was just getting out of high school, which means I was navigating adulthood while Aqua was busy convincing the entire planet that plastic is fantastic.
Honestly, this song is one of the reasons the Clock Radio Classic was invented.
🩷 Aqua is Danish-Norwegian. The band was formed in Denmark, while singer Lene Nystrøm is Norwegian. So technically, Barbie Girl is Scandinavian chaos.
🩷 “Barbie Girl” wasn’t actually written for Barbie. The song was inspired by the kitschy, plastic aesthetic surrounding Barbie dolls and was intended as a playful satire of consumer culture.
🩷 Mattel was NOT amused. The toy company famously sued MCA Records over the song, arguing that it infringed on the Barbie trademark. The courts ultimately ruled in favor of the record company, treating the song as parody.
🩷 The song became a massive worldwide hit, reaching No. 1 in numerous countries and becoming Aqua’s signature song.
And somehow, nearly three decades later, it still works.
So this morning, we’re turning the clock back to 1997, dusting off the boombox, putting on our invisible platform shoes and asking the important question:
