Let’s take a trip back to 1995, when one reggae-infused jam was absolutely EVERYWHERE. Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper” was the soundtrack to the year, taking over radio stations, dance floors, MTV and pretty much any place where somebody had access to a boombox and questionable dance moves.
Released in 1994, the song exploded in popularity in 1995, eventually reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. And here’s a fun little twist: it got a major boost after being featured in the soundtrack to the fashion-world comedy Prêt-à-Porter (also known as Ready to Wear), directed by Robert Altman. The movie? Let’s just say it didn’t exactly become a cinematic classic. The song? Well, that’s another story!
More than three decades later, most of us probably couldn’t tell you a single thing about the plot of Prêt-à-Porter, but we can still belt out “Na na na na na…” the second that unmistakable beat kicks in. That’s the magic of a true one-hit wonder. Ini Kamoze gave us a song that somehow blended reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and an attitude that made everyone feel like they were the coolest person in the room.
So crank up the volume, dust off those 1995 dance moves and prepare to be transported back to a time when this song was hotter than a freshly ironed pair of parachute pants.
Here comes the Hotstepper! And apparently, here comes another reminder that 1995 was 31 YEARS AGO. We’re going to need a minute to process that. Hit it!
