Madison got a little DMB treatment last night! We’re celebrating Dave Matthews Band’s show at the Kohl Center, and what better way to keep the concert vibes rolling this morning than with one of their most recognizable, foot-tapping, sing-it-at-the-top-of-your-lungs classics.
If you’ve ever been to a Dave Matthews Band concert, you know the drill. The moment those opening notes hit, the crowd comes alive. Suddenly, everybody knows every word, the air is filled with dancing, and somewhere in the building there’s at least one person who has decided they’re an expert at playing the violin part. (They’re probably not. But we admire the enthusiasm.)
Released in 1994 on the band’s breakthrough album Under the Table and Dreaming, “Ants Marching” became one of DMB’s signature songs. The album helped introduce the band to a much wider audience and went on to sell millions of copies. The song itself is built around the band’s unmistakable combination of acoustic guitar, violin, saxophone, bass and percussion, creating that wonderfully distinctive sound that’s nearly impossible to confuse with anybody else.
But there’s more to “Ants Marching” than a catchy melody and a rhythm that practically forces your foot to start tapping. The song explores the routines of everyday life, comparing people going through the motions to ants marching in a line. It’s a reminder of how easy it can be to get caught up in the daily grind without stopping to enjoy the ride.
Which is a pretty good message for a Thursday morning. Get out of bed, grab some coffee, and try not to march through the day on autopilot. Unless, of course, you’re actually an ant. In that case, carry on.
And to everyone who made it out to the Kohl Center last night: we hope you had an incredible time! This morning, we’re bringing a little of that Madison concert energy back to Sheboygan.
