Happy 85th birthday to the legendary Paul Simon! Today, we’re celebrating with a funky little masterpiece from 1986 that just happens to be one of my all-time top 10 favorite songs.
You know the one! That infectious groove, those fabulous horns, and a bass line that practically demands you move your backside before you’ve had your first cup of coffee.
And then there’s the MUSIC VIDEO!
Paul Simon teamed up with comedian Chevy Chase for one of the most wonderfully awkward and hilarious music videos of the ’80s. Chevy lip-syncs the lead vocals while Paul provides the backing vocals, and the two trade places throughout the video with some priceless deadpan expressions. It’s gloriously weird, gloriously funny, and somehow makes an already fantastic song even better.
Released in 1986, this tune became one of Simon’s signature solo hits, blending irresistible pop, African-inspired rhythms, and a seriously funky horn arrangement. It’s proof that great music doesn’t need to take itself too seriously to become legendary.
So, happy birthday, Paul! Thanks for decades of brilliant songwriting, unforgettable music, and a video that still makes us laugh 40 years later.
Now, turn up those horns, shake off the morning cobwebs, and get ready to groove. Your coffee can wait!
