It’s 1999 all over again! Twenty-seven years ago, Italian dance group Eiffel 65 gave us a song so ridiculously catchy that we’re STILL singing it… even if nobody can agree on what the heck the lyrics mean.
“Blue (Da Ba Dee)” turned the world into a giant blue dance floor, complete with computerized vocals and a chorus that sounded like your Windows 98 computer was having a really good day.
Some listeners thought the lyrics were “I’m blue and I’m in need of a guy,” sparking theories about the song’s meaning. But nope! The actual lyrics are about a fictional blue character and his blue world. Sorry, conspiracy theorists.
And that voice? It wasn’t simply a case of turning on Auto-Tune and calling it a day. The distinctive robotic sound is believed to have come from vocal-harmonizing technology. Basically, somebody figured out how to make a human sound like a dance track from outer space.
The group’s name has a fun origin, too. “Eiffel” came from a computer, while “65” was accidentally included in a message. The guys decided it was fate. Apparently, even typos were destined for international stardom in the ’90s!
Fast-forward to 2022, when David Guetta and Bebe Rexha sampled the familiar hook for “I’m Good (Blue),” introducing the earworm to a whole new generation.
So grab your brightest blue outfit, fire up that imaginary Windows 98 desktop, and prepare to sing along with absolutely unreasonable enthusiasm.
