Thirty years ago today, we were all doing the Macarena.
And honestly… some of us never really stopped.
It was 1996. We had Tamagotchis, dial-up Internet, questionable frosted tips and enough neon clothing to make an airport runway jealous. And then along came Los del Río’s “Macarena”—a song that somehow convinced an entire planet to stand in a line, raise its arms, shake its hips and perform the exact same choreography whether we knew what we were doing or not.
The song had already been around for a few years, but the Bayside Boys remix turned it into an international phenomenon. It eventually spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the biggest pop hits of the entire decade.
You didn’t need lessons. You didn’t need rhythm. You didn’t even need dignity.
You just watched the person next to you and hoped for the best.
Hands out. Palms up. Palms down. Hands on your shoulders. Hands on your head. Hips. Turn. Repeat.
Congratulations! You were now a professional Macarena dancer.
The amazing thing is that 30 years later, “Macarena” still has the ability to completely hijack a dance floor. Put it on at a wedding, school dance, class reunion, bar or pretty much any party where someone has access to a DJ booth, and suddenly people who haven’t danced in 20 years are up there giving it everything they’ve got.
It doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 75.
