A Calumet County resident in the Village of Harrison was the victim of a “swatting” crime last evening, leading emergency responders to swarm a quiet neighborhood near Menasha on Lake Winnebago’s north shore.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office said that they got a call shortly before 7 PM from a man who claimed that he’d been stabbed in the chest, and that his wife was deceased after he’d shot her with a firearm. Deputies responding to the scene on Winding Trail Drive contacted the homeowner and determined that there were no signs of a homicide, weapons related incident, or other emergency at the home, and also judged that there was no ongoing threat to the public. The initial call did lead to response from the Sheriff along with Harrison Fire Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Brillion Police.
A swatting crime consists of someone making a false emergency report intended to prompt a significant response by law enforcement, fire, or EMS agents, which ultimately ties up resources needed for genuine emergencies. They’re also dangerous because the event must be treated as genuine until it can be safely determined otherwise.
