An opportunity exists for a person to serve in Sheboygan County government as County Administrator Alayne Krause has announced an opening on the Sheboygan County Board of Adjustment. The person selected would serve the remainder of a term ending in 2028.
The Board of Adjustment is an independent, quasi-judicial body that reviews and decides appeals to the County’s Planning & Conservation Department and Airport Division in conjunction with the administration of sanitary, shoreland, floodplain, nonmetallic mining, and airport height limitation ordinances. The Board of Adjustment may also grant special exceptions or variances to ordinances where literal enforcement of the ordinances would result in unnecessary hardship.
A candidate for the Board of Adjustment must be a qualified elector and resident in any of the unincorporated (rural) areas of Sheboygan County, however no two members may be from the same township, and so candidates must reside in one of the following towns: Russell, Herman, Mosel, Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan, Wilson, Scott or Sherman.
A candidate should be capable of critical analysis, make independent decisions, conscientiously apply unprejudiced standards to a variety of zoning and land use situations, and adhere to rules and regulations pertaining to conduct and operation of the Board of Adjustment. Although a candidate doesn’t need specific legal, zoning, or conservation knowledge, some awareness or interest in zoning and land use matters would be a plus. Board of Adjustment members will have the opportunity to attend training sessions that are held throughout the state.
The Board of Adjustment meets the third Wednesday of the month when hearings are scheduled, beginning at 1 PM at the Sheboygan County Administration Building. The Board meets on average three times per year. Additionally, each member must participate in scheduled field inspections of the properties in question before the respective meeting. Board of Adjustment members receive mileage reimbursement and a per diem for meetings and field inspections.
