The Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the Department of Health Services announce online publication of the 2026-2028 Choose Wisely booklet, which outlines consumption guidelines for fish from water bodies across the state.
Fish are a great source of lean protein and healthy omega-3 fats, but pollutants may build up in their bodies, and some can reach levels harmful to wildlife and humans who eat fish. The DNR routinely samples fish from popular angling areas and waters with suspected pollution and contaminants. Certain locations, such as parts of the Yahara River Chain of Lakes and the Wisconsin and La Crosse rivers, now have more restrictive consumption advisories, including “Do Not Eat” for some species.
The online booklet is searchable, enabling the list of individual Sheboygan County waters with active advisories. You can access that booklet here.
