Controversy was voiced at Monday night’s Common Council meeting concerning an insert proposed to be mailed with property tax bills in Sheboygan. Proponents on the Council claimed the insert was an attempt at greater transparency that enumerates the impact of school choice vouchers on property taxes, while other members saw the motion as a strictly political attempt to paint the school voucher program in a bad light.
Public input was evenly split, but during Council discussion Alder Heidemann challenged authorship by committee, claiming that it was not written by committee members but rather came from the Mayor’s office. Alder Mitchell, who is listed as an author of the resolution, confirmed that he would be voting against the measure.
After rather lengthy discussion, the item was approved by a 7-3 vote.
