City Hall is undertaking an information campaign after petitioners aiming to limit use of TIDs, or Tax Increment Districts, collected enough signatures to force action.
The City of Sheboygan has posted a statement on their Facebook site which states that they are aware there have been questions and concerns raised lately and they want to clarify any misunderstandings. The statement stresses that city officials are dedicated to maintaining transparency and open communication with residents regarding development agreements, recent public questions, and financial practices related to TIDs.
The post lists a series of slides clarifying those agreements and TID administration. The statement comes after a community group presented a petition to the council, which seeks to rein in the use of Tax Increment Districts, or TIDs, by city developers. If validated by the city clerk, the petition triggers a response from the Common Council, which will then be forced to either approve the ordinance as presented, or decline it, which would send the issue back to voters to decide. Sheboygan City Mayor Ryan Sorenson responded to the petition, calling it deeply concerning, and says its passage would make it more difficult for the City to remain fiscally sustainable over the long term.
