Reports of people receiving calls from a Sheriff’s deputy informing them of missing payments or court dates are becoming more common in eastern Wisconsin.
Earlier this week we reported Sheboygan County residents receiving such calls from scammers trying to get money or personal information. That same tactic is now reported from Fond du Lac County where the Sheriff or other law enforcement agencies are imitated by scammers claiming warrants, citations and missed court appointments can be fixed with a payment through gift cards or other means.
These are invariably scam calls and if you get one, you should just hang up. If you have already responded with money or personal information, call your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible. Although recovering loss is rare, it has happened, and your report could help track the scammers.
