Manitowoc County has passed an ordinance stopping any data center development for a year and a half.
The data center moratorium was passed unanimously by the Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors after they heard almost a dozen residents express their support for the proposal. There were a couple of amendments made for future data center storage as well as the extension from a 12-month moratorium to an 18-month moratorium.
The ordinance was created after three towns in Manitowoc County passed a resolution earlier this year asking for the county to create the 1-1/2 year ban. Town representatives say they were concerned about potential secondary impacts of data centers affecting property values, causing noise, and hurting public health.
