WISCONSIN — The Wisconsin State Climatology Office is seeking volunteer precipitation observers across the state. These observations support a wide range of efforts, including evaluating long-term snowfall trends, monitoring drought conditions, and tracking intense rainfall events. They increase our understanding of how precipitation impacts Wisconsin’s agriculture, water resources, recreation, and other sectors. Reliable measurements also improve weather forecasting by providing the National Weather Service with “ground truth” observations.
Why are we looking for volunteer precipitation observers? Wisconsin’s weather can vary significantly from one location to another, and official weather stations are not located everywhere. As a result, localized precipitation data are often limited. Volunteer observers help fill these gaps, providing a more detailed and accurate picture of precipitation patterns across the state.
Using a standardized rain gauge ensures consistency among measurements, reducing discrepancies that can occur with different equipment. This official network of volunteers allows the State Climatology Office and other weather and climate service providers to track precipitation events and place them into historical context.
Additional observations can make an especially strong impact in areas with limited coverage. We welcome new volunteers in Forest, Langlade, Juneau, Trempealeau, Menominee, Crawford, and Calumet counties, as well as rural communities throughout the state. These added reports will greatly enhance our understanding of local conditions.
Volunteers measure and report rain, hail, snowfall, and snowpack depth (or liquid water equivalent). While daily observations are encouraged, those who can report occasionally are also welcome. The process takes about five minutes per day and requires a standardized rain gauge, which costs approximately $45.
