25 years ago today.
You probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news on September 11th, 2001.
Music has a strange and powerful way of taking us back to a specific moment in time. A song can bring back a place, a feeling, a person… and sometimes, an entire day.
“I’m Real” by Jennifer Lopez was the #1 song in the country on September 11th, 2001. It was just another hit on the radio as the day began — before the world changed forever.
September 11th means something different to everyone. Maybe you remember the towers in New York City. The Pentagon in Virginia. The passengers and crew who fought back over Pennsylvania. Or maybe you simply remember where you were when the world suddenly felt very different.
I was working at a Top 40 radio station that morning. By the time the day unfolded, we had essentially become a news and talk station. People called because they needed to talk. They needed to share what they knew, what they were hearing, and most of all, how they were feeling.
Those feelings never really leave you.
But I also remember something else about that time — how, for a brief moment, we came together. We stood on common ground. We looked out for one another. We were Americans first.
We remember the lives lost. We remember the heroes. We remember where we were. And we remember how we came together.
September 11, 2001 — 25 years later, we still remember. Together, we will never forget.
