Remember this one?
Back in the late summer of 1999—otherwise known as approximately 276 years ago in the world of pop culture—Macy Gray gave us a song that was impossible to mistake for anybody else.
“I Try.”
With that wonderfully raspy, soulful, slightly-wobbly-in-all-the-right-places voice, Macy Gray sounded like she’d been gargling gravel and sunshine before stepping into the recording studio. And somehow… it worked BEAUTIFULLY.
The song became one of the biggest hits of her career, climbing to the top of the charts around the world and earning her a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance.
And here’s the really weird part:
Macy Gray just turned 59 last weekend.
Fifty-nine!
Which means that somewhere out there, Macy is still trying… while the rest of us are trying to remember where we put our reading glasses.
So let’s crank the clock back to 1999, when flip phones were futuristic, Y2K was terrifying, and this incredibly unique voice was everywhere.
