Today, we celebrate Debbie Gibson’s 56th Birthday! — and, apparently, the fact that some of us have been carrying a very specific late-’80s crush for nearly four decades. I can’t imagine who.
Back in 1989, I was one of several hundred million teenage boys who suddenly discovered that Debbie Gibson was pretty darn adorable. And then she released this song.
“Lost in Your Eyes” reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on March 4, 1989, where it stayed for three weeks.
Debbie Gibson wrote the song BY HERSELF when she was just 17 years old.
At 17, I was probably trying to figure out how to record songs off the radio without getting the DJ’s voice at the beginning. Now I am that DJ! Debbie was writing a massive pop ballad that would become a No. 1 hit and appear on her hugely successful album Electric Youth.
Almost 40 years later, I still absolutely love this song. It’s sweet, beautifully written, ridiculously nostalgic, and it instantly transports me back to a time when a cordless phone, a stack of cassette tapes and a poster on your bedroom wall constituted a pretty sophisticated entertainment system.
So, in honor of Debbie Gibson’s 56th birthday, we’re spinning “Lost in Your Eyes” for today’s 6:30 Clock Radio Classic.
