The owners of hundreds of thousands of Kia Telluride vehicles are being instructed to park them outdoors and away from buildings and other vehicles due to a flaw that could set them on fire. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said that model years 2020-2024 are affected and were previously recalled two years ago for the same issue.
The problem arises if the front power seat slide cover or knob is hit or accidentally struck. That can dislodge or damage the switch, possibly engaging the seat motor continually until overheating and catching fire. Kia is aware of seven seat fires and 11 seat motors melting.
Owners will not receive notice to schedule repairs until August 13th, but beginning this Friday, July 17th, vehicle IDs and license plate numbers will be in a searchable database online at nhtsa.gov. Owners can also call the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542, or visit Kia’s owner portal for more information.
