Dealing with the loss of a loved one is a universal experience, yet grief remains a topic many people shy away from. To help break the stigma surrounding loss and bring the community together, Greenlawn Memorial Park is hosting a special Butterfly Release in honor of National Grief Awareness Day.
Christina Wilke-Burbach from Greenlawn Memorial Park recently spoke about the upcoming event and the importance of open conversation when navigating loss. As Christina highlighted, society often treats grief as a taboo subject; people frequently hesitate to mention a deceased loved one out of fear of causing pain. However, leaning into those memories, sharing stories, and connecting with a supportive community are crucial steps toward healing.

A butterfly release serves as a visual metaphor for this journey. Just as a caterpillar undergoes a period of quiet confinement before emerging with wings, human grief moves from heavy sorrow to a place of hope and enduring memory. Releasing butterflies into the open air symbolizes releasing pain while carrying the light of our loved ones forward.
Everyone in the community is invited to gather, share memories, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone.
