Get ready, Sheboygan! We are about to get a massive dose of Broadway magic right here in our own backyard. I recently had the absolute honor of chatting with the incredible Laura Bell Bundy on The Point Morning Show. If you know your theater history, you know she originated the role of Amber Von Tussle in Hairspray and Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.
LISTEN HERE!!!
She’s heading to the Weill Center for the Performing Arts right here in Sheboygan on Friday, May 8th, and she isn’t coming alone.
The Ultimate Hairspray Reunion
The upcoming show, Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now, is a powerhouse reunion. Joining Laura on stage are her original Hairspray co-stars:
- Kerry Butler (the original Penny Pingleton)
- Marissa Jaret Winokur (the Tony-winning original Tracy Turnblad)
Laura describes the show as a “spin-off” that celebrates their shared history. It’s a mix of a reunion concert and a deep dive into their lives, tracking their journeys from being young performers to becoming mothers themselves.
A Setlist for Every Fan
Whether you’re a die-hard “theater kid” or just looking for a great night out with the family, the setlist is stacked. You can expect hits from a massive range of shows, including:
- Wicked and Legally Blonde
- Mean Girls and Beetlejuice
- A special Disney medley
Backstage Secrets and “The Show Must Go On”
One of the best parts of our conversation was hearing Laura’s wild stories from the Broadway trenches. From her wig flying off during a high-energy dance number in Legally Blonde to the time she performed an entire show with a fractured arm, she’s seen it all.
She even shared a hilarious story about a last-minute emergency where she had to step in as Glinda in Wicked with only ten minutes’ notice while the star was dealing with a stomach bug in the same dressing room!
