Sheboygan has earned another recognition for being a “Pet-Friendly-City” by Mars Petcare, a major pet food and health products corporation. The “Pet-Friendly Certification” from Mars is the second honor conferred upon Sheboygan, having received a $20,000 “Better Cities for Pets” grant earlier this year in March. That grant is being applied to provide signage for all 36 Sheboygan parks, informing visitors whether or not pets are welcome. Each pet-friendly park is being outfitted with waste stations; two of them will have pet water fountains installed, and a page on the City’s website is being dedicated as a hub for pet-related information and resources.
The Certification, announced on Thursday, is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Mars Petcare Jam Stewart said that the certification “celebrates cities that are creating positive and welcoming environments for people and their pets.” Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson added that many businesses, such as the Gameboard downtown and 3 Sheeps Brewery already allow leashed pets at their establishments, and the Humane Society has expanded programming to include vaccine clinics, low cost Spay and Neuter, and “Trap, Neuter, Return” programs.
