A medical emergency may have been the reason that an Oshkosh man needed to be forced from an area highway on Thursday night.
A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy reported a vehicle southbound on I-41 at around 10:45 PM Thursday. Lights and sirens failed to get the driver to pull over near Highway 151, and the pursuit continued at normal highway speeds down the interstate.
The vehicle exited at County Highway “B”, failing to stop and entering the wrong direction eastbound on “B”. Deputies tried a PIT maneuver in order to bring the dangerous actions to an end, but the driver accelerated away, striking a traffic sign and two trees before coming to rest. When officers approached, the driver hit the gas, spinning the wheels but going nowhere. The 85-year-old Oshkosh man then exited and surrendered.
The man, reported to be confused, disoriented and trying to return to Oshkosh, was turned over to a family member after sustaining only a minor laceration during his crash. There was property damage to multiple trees on a private landowner’s property and to the fleeing vehicle.
