The annual campaign to remind the public of the need to use their seat belts was launched today.
Click It Or Ticket is a high-visibility effort by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, and will put extra officers on highways now through June 1st. During the campaign those officers will be keeping their eyes out for anyone not following laws regarding proper restraints while traveling.
The NHTSA said that on average, someone dies every 50 minutes in a crash because seatbelts or child seats weren’t used. In 2023, not using them resulted in 10,484 deaths, and it’s estimated that young adults age 18-34 comprised 60 percent of those who were completely unrestrained.
It’s hoped that with more City, County and State patrols watching for such violations, the Memorial Day holiday will be remembered for the holiday it is, and not for the death of a loved one.
