Snow lovers are a jilted sort this December, as temperatures some 10 degrees above average as measured at the Sheboygan County Airport, have been hostile to anything akin to a White Christmas. And even as forecasters with the National Weather Service offer discussions on possible weather hazards in the near term, they readily point out that any snow one might see in the next 24 hours or so will be little more than a curiosity among the much more dominant rain that’s poised to put down an inch or more of liquid water across the area. Were our temperatures expected to be typical of this time of year, that in itself could mean 10 inches or more of the white stuff. Instead the hazards of cold, ponding rain such as hydroplaning at high speed will be much more present than winter driving conditions.
Nonetheless, visibilities could easily be impacted in heavier rain and/or snow showers, most likely to occur in the early Thursday morning hours, especially inland of Lake Michigan. A little extra time is likely the only preparation needed for now.
Looking ahead, some very light snow activity may happen over the weekend, but there doesn’t appear to be much of a hazard as a result.
