An ice jam that caused the Sheboygan River to flood over the weekend has broken, ending flood conditions sooner than expected.
The National Weather Service had issued a flood warning when the river exceeded its banks on Friday. An ice jam plus about a quarter inch of rain were responsible for the rise which sometimes added a foot of water in under a half hour. The river peaked at just above 9 feet early Saturday morning, three feet above flood stage, sending water over the banks and flooding low-lying areas, including Esslingen Park in Sheboygan and River Park in Sheboygan Falls. But the flood was short lived. The ice jam broke up around noon on Sunday, dropping the river level four feet in four hours, and returning the waters to their eventual destination in Lake Michigan.
