It’s fair to assume that when the Ryder Cup opens at Whistling Straits next week drawing between 40 and 45 thousand observers each day, there could be traffic jams on the roads. But the Federal Aviation Administration is already planning for similar conditions in the skies above Sheboygan County. They’ve issued a “NOTAM”, or Notice to Airmen, that they’ll be operating a Temporary Control Tower at the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport between 7 AM and 10 PM beginning this Saturday through at least Monday the 27th. If needed, they may extend operations until Wednesday the 29th. The airport usually sees 118 takeoffs and landings each day, but that’s expected to be much higher for the tournament.
During the operations, any aircraft planning to use the airport will be directed by Federal Aviation operators who will keep takeoffs and landings safely spaced and routed just as with the nation’s largest airports.
If you keep your eyes to the skies, besides all the arrivals and departures you can also expect to see helicopters and blimps over Whistling Straits throughout the tournament that begins in one week.
