It’s gotta be one of the most thankless gigs in Sheboygan (or anywhere really). Working out in the middle of distracted traffic in the heat of summer and the cold of winter… FILLING POTHOLES! Everyone’s got a snarky comment or complaint about their least favorite stretch of Sheboygan asphalt, but honestly they do what they can to keep up with the city’s always challenging infrastructure. I got just a sample taste in a ride along with Mayor Ryan Sorenson and the Sheboygan DPW crew to see what it takes to keep things smooth for Sheboygan drivers. I learned that the mix of rocky goo they get is actually gotten from the county and loaded up into this giant slow cooker on wheels the night before. It simmers to be just the right consistency for pothole filling the next morning. If there’s one thing the DPW Sheboygan crew would ask of you (the driver) it’s to slow down and pay attention (to them, not your phone) when you see them working. People just don’t and it gets super dangerous. Enjoy some footage from my mayoral ride along… and our attempt to make the make the actual professional pothole crew laugh. That’s enough physical manual labor for these soft hands for now! Thanks for the opportunity!

Its National Public Works Week! “Advancing the Quality of Life For All,” which is in direct correspondence with the City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works mission “to improve the quality of life by effectively developing, maintaining, and improving the infrastructure, natural resources, and community services.”
The “Advancing Quality of Life for All” theme shines a spotlight on the way public works professionals advance our quality of life, whether as a first responder to a summer or winter storm, regular waste pickup, or the myriad of other ways they silently serve their communities.
The City of Sheboygan Public Works professionals advance the quality of life by providing an infrastructure of services in wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, and right-of-way management. They are what make our communities dynamic places to live and work. Join us in celebrating the quiet work these professionals do that makes life better for all of us.
