Today’s spring election presents plenty of competition in some races, none in many others, and the chance to give “thumbs-up-or-down” on several important questions. For many there will be votes to be cast only for Presidential Preference and two State Referenda along with unchallenged local seats. But like in real estate, it’s all about location.
Unchallenged elections abound, such as in many school board seats, municipal court judges and alders. Among Sheboygan County Board elections there were no candidates in Districts 15 and 19 where a write-in could have an easy-in. Those two seats were among five involving board members who announced their intents to step down back in January. Contested seats include District 2 between incumbent Paul Gruber and challenger Travis Gross; and in District 3 where incumbent Kathleen Donovan is challenged by Isabel Rivera. District 12 pits incumbent Suzanne Speltz against Robert Ziegelbauer who’d previously held that seat from 2020-2022, and in District 20 incumbent Carl Nonhof faces a challenge from Michael Vogl for his seat.
Voters in the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah School District will be asked to approve or reject spending $1.75 million dollars over state revenue limits each of the next 4 years beginning with the next school year and ending with 2027-28. Since that’s for operations and general maintenance, it’s a risky proposal that, if rejected, could freeze per-pupil revenue for three years with only standard scheduled increases from the State.
In races for City of Sheboygan Alderperson, in District 2, John Belanger is challenging incumbent Roberta Filicky-Peneski. In District 4 where incumbent Betty Ackley is not running for reelection, the choice is between Robert La Fave and Deb Yochis. District 6 incumbent Dean Dekker is being challenged by Joseph Vugrinovich. Conservative Jesse Roethel is hoping to unseat incumbent Zachary rust for the District 8 Alder seat. The District 10 post is between incumbent Joseph Heidemann and challenger Marcia L. Reinthaler.
In the City of Plymouth, the District 3 Alderperson race is between incumbent Robert Schilsky and challenger John P. Binder.
City of Sheboygan Falls voters will select their mayor between incumbent Randy Meyer and challenger Al Mayer, and the District 1 Alderperson race will be decided between incumbent Terry Van Engen and challenger Robyn Denning.
In township elections, the Town of Plymouth Board Supervisor contest will seat two of three candidates: Kenneth Velier, Gary Vanderkin and Roger Rortvedt. The top two vote-getters will be seated. The Town of Rhine Board Supervisor #3 will be decided between Derek Schukow and William G. Jacob. Jr., while the Supervisor #4 contest is between Jeffrey Lingford and Larry Eberle. Town of Sheboygan voters will decide the Supervisor #3 race between Pat Schmidt and Randy Blindauer. The Town of Wilson will seat the top two vote-getters as supervisors between Nancy DesJardins, Stu Stempihar, Todd Richter and Marc Brami.
In Village elections, three Kohler Trustees will be selected from a field consisting of Paul Carlsen, John Winter, Jenny Roatch, John Ewert, Tracy Thomas Lyons, Kelly Jensen Kasten and Houston Hoskins. Three Village of Random Lake Village Trustees will be selected between Blaine Werner, Elizabeth Manian, Rachel Fuller, Duane Urbanski and Timmy Phalen.
In school district ballots, in the Howards Grove School District voters will select two out of the field of Courtney Athorp, Janina H. Siemers, Brandon L. Suemnicht and Dave Loomis. School District of Sheboygan Falls voters will select the top two vote-getters out of four: Ed Brey, Cathryn Schear, Nicole Kuplic and Adam Arnhoelter. New Holstein School District is selecting two School Board Member in a contest between Rose M. Petrie, Jodie Goebel and Craig Sesing. Four Board Members-At-Large will be selected by Kiel Area School District voters…the five candidates are Jon Lee, H.M. Tre Waldren III, Karin Wille, Stuart Long and Tammie Stahl. And in the Sheboygan Area School District, four candidates are running for three seats: Leah Hibl, Santino Laster, Peter Madden and Isabel Rivera.
Polls close at 8 p.m. tonight.
