Wisconsin’s 2023 nine-day gun deer season is in the books, and is noted as falling anywhere from about 15-20 percent below last year, depending on the metric.
Statewide, Wisconsin hunters registered 173,942 deer during the 9-day hunt, including 85,390 antlered and 88,552 antlerless deer. That puts total harvest 17.6% below last year, with the antlered harvest down 14.7% and the antlerless harvest down 20.3%. Including deer taken since the opening of the bow and crossbow seasons, Wisconsin has reduced the number of whitetail deer by 266,132 in 2023.
Statewide only three gun-related accidents occurred, none fatal, and down from eight the previous season.
Sheboygan County belongs to the DNR’s Central Farmland Zone, which saw the largest harvest of all zones overall with 98,556 deer taken, 44,587 antlered, and 53,696 antlerless.
Within Sheboygan County itself, preliminary numbers show 862 antlered and 934 antlerless deer taken for a total of 1,796 for the 9-day season. Including the Archery, Crossbow, Youth Deer and Muzzleloader hunts, 2,892 deer have been harvested here in 2023.
Still to come are the remainder of the Muzzleloader season which runs through December 6th, the December 4-Day Antlerless-Only Hunt December 7-10.
Also still to come are the Antlerless-Only Holiday Hunt December 24-January 1 and the Extended Archery Season January 8-31 in select counties, including Sheboygan.
