MADISON – The Wisconsin State Senate today passed a bill that would allow more efficient transportation of milk and milk products in Wisconsin. Senate Bill 431, authored by Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) and Representative Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc), passed unanimously and would allow the creation of a Department of Transportation (DOT) permit to haul milk and whey from cheese making in semi-tractor trailers with six axles at 98,000 pounds.
This permit program would help address the ongoing shortage of truck drivers, increase efficiency for the industry and reduce overall road maintenance costs for taxpayers.

“The ongoing driver shortage is a tremendous challenge for dairy farmers and this proposal is truly a win-win for agriculture, consumers and taxpayers. These permits will allow the transport of the same amount of milk on fewer trips, using less fuel and causing less wear and tear on roads.
