Alliant Energy says it is making “exciting progress” at its Onion River Solar Project. The company says that civil sitework should be completed this month, meaning that all driveways and access roads will be finished and the fields prepared for installation.
The support structures for the panels that will convert the sunlight into power are largely in place, construction of the substation that will connect the plant to the grid is well underway, and roughly 40 percent of the electrical cable is installed.
Once complete, the solar panels will be surrounded by vegetation designed to be pollinator-friendly, and once that is mature, should reduce the amount of nutrient and soil runoff into the environment.
The 150 megawatt installation in the Sheboygan County Town of Holland is expected to be complete later this year, reducing Alliant Energy’s carbon footprint while providing enough electricity to power around 40,000 homes.
