SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The Sheboygan Fire Department and the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department – along with Ocean Rescue Systems of Portland, Maine – will be taking to the waters off Sheboygan for four days of surf rescue training beginning today. Several key locations will be employed, as each provides its own unique hazards that can challenge rescuers during an emergency.
The goal is to certify six Sheboygan Fire Department members as Public Safety Rescue Swimmers, and to provide an opportunity to work closely with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department boat operators in a real surf environment. Once trained, those six will then pass along their skills and additional training to the rest of the fire department responders.
SFD Battalion Chief Jeffrey Salzman says this week’s training should improve the ability of local responders to more safely and effectively conduct rescue operations.
