Apparently he was feeling nostalgic on his birthday, because he Tweeted this baby photo with the caption, "Where I was 27 years ago..."

Sad news to pass along this morning...
Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco, died this morning ending her battle with cancer.
The music legend was 63-years-old.

To be fair, he must have done a decent job throughout the night, because he did advance to the bonus round.
And, I get how if your mind is stuck on viewing the puzzle a certain way, it's really tough to change course. He saw '_and' and assumed the word had an 'and' sound, and not an 'ond' sound.
Plus you throw in the audience, and the added 'only 10 seconds to figure it out' pressure, it's understandable.
